Garlic chives

Gone to seed.

Fig tree

Here are my fig trees. It wasn't such a great year for them, no figs. But they did come back after the winter so I'm happy about that.

Planes

As the plane goes, the high spots are shave down, the low spots shrink. When they are gone, the plane gives great long curling shavings

Timberframed mailbox post

Just about finished, all that's left is to put it out by the road. Main joint is a housed wedged through mortise, brace is blind mortise and tenon at both ends.

Tools used, in the order of laying about: hatchet, commander, gimlet, saw, brace and bit, chisel, plane, pencil, mallet, dividers, square, screwdriver (to adjust plane) clamp.

No electricity was used in this project. Cheats are: glued up a part that split, used cut nails for added security on the brace.

Garden and woodworking

So I did a rather great lot of weeding over the weekend, so being sick of that turned my attention to the mailbox post project again. Here is the main joint, almost home

Now the brace mortise. Then two joints at once... !

Secret project

The secret project is about done. Still don't know if it will work. Doesn't look half bad despite many shortcuts

Garden

Weeds are getting out of hand

Beef jerky

Not gardening, not woodworking. But I did it and want to record it, so here it is. I put the fan flat, up on blocks so air still flows, then stack the filters full of meat on top. I ran air through it for about 24hrs.

Thanks Kimberly for turning me on to this, and Alton Brown

Olives

Today tenth of June did I
Eat the last six olives in oxymeli.
They are good, but some of the bitter is drifting back into them from the liquid. They were put up in October 2014 with a change of oxymeli in jan 2015

Today, 24 may

good times in the garden today.  got out the mower and cyclone rake and sucked up a bunch of clippings to use as mulch around the plants.  I still haven't found much on mulch in period, but i can't keep up with the weeding otherwise.  And i've hauled water from the river in buckets, but now that there's more plants i can't keep up with that either.  So the mulch and the hose take the place of a gardening staff.

and it was hot so finished it off with a dunk in the river.
